A lone B-17E of the 93rd Squadron, 19th Bomb Group, is late returning froma bombing mission to Rabaul in the Spring of 1942. Delayed with #2 engine shut down and another trailing smoke, the pilot is able to ease the aircraft through a pass in the Owen Stanley mountain range and now has Port Moresby and 7-mile airstrip in sight. Greeted by two P-39s of the 35th Squadron, 8th Pursuit Group, he now knows he will be on the ground by dark. It has been a long day.
