| This
is 1942 in my life. I
graduated from the U.S. Army Air Corps Flying School
five days after Pearl Harbor. Less than a month later I was a
co-pilot on an brand new B-17E and on my way from Tampa, Florida to
South America, Africa, Arabia, India and Ceylon (Sri Lanka) to Java.
I survived the Japanese invasion of Java by escaping aboard a
Dutch freighter to Australia. I flew bombing missions from Australia and
New Guinea for the rest of the year, returning to marry my art school
sweetheart in December.
This painting depicts events that ocurred during the year including the first time I was shot at (Upper left), a forced landing in Brazil, an elephant gets our tail wheel out from between some railroad tracks in Bangalore,India and our three B-17’s attacking 22 ships in the Coral Sea.
